Abstract:

Planning our educational needs to design our own preferred futures is like driving a car at night! When we are on the road at night, we do not (usually) put the headlights on for a moment or two and then turn them off before accelerating into the darkness. We keep the lights on and constantly re-evaluate our driving strategy as the lights reveal new opportunities and threats to our journey. However, what threats should we look out for and how do we become the people we need to be, given our own strengths and weaknesses and our own personal histories?  In this presentation I will consider a few of the areas of which I believe that all of us need to be aware regardless of our core academic disciplines and our preferred directions in life. They include geography, history, politics, psychology and sociology and hope that from them we may be able to construct a personal SWOT analysis (of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) to help us get through current times successfully.
